Which bath your dog actually needs

"Hypoallergenic" is used loosely in this industry, so here is what we mean by each of ours.

Hypoallergenic

Fragrance-free and dye-free, with a mild surfactant base. This is the default for dogs with reactive skin, and the one to choose when you do not know what is causing the irritation — it removes the shampoo itself from the list of suspects.

Oatmeal

Colloidal oatmeal soothes skin that is already itchy and inflamed. It is the right choice for seasonal itching and general dryness, and it is what most dogs with mild irritation need.

Medicated

For dogs already diagnosed with a skin condition, and used alongside what your vet has prescribed rather than instead of it. If your vet has given you a specific shampoo, bring it and we will use theirs.

Why coastal dogs itch here

Aventura dogs swim in salt water, walk on hot pavement, and come home to air conditioning. Salt left in the coat draws moisture out of the skin as it dries, and it concentrates exactly where the coat is thinnest — belly, groin, armpits and between the toes. That is why the redness shows up there first.

Sand is the second half of the problem. It works into the coat and between the pads and keeps abrading long after the beach trip, so a dog that seems fine on the day starts chewing their feet two days later.

A rinse at home helps and is worth doing, but a hose rarely reaches the skin under a thick coat. Getting all the way down to the skin, and then drying properly so nothing stays damp against it, is most of what a salon bath is for.

What we cannot do

We are groomers, not veterinarians. A soothing bath helps an itchy dog feel better and removes what is irritating them, but it does not diagnose or treat an allergy, an infection or a parasite. If we see hot spots, open skin, a yeasty smell or hair loss in patches, we will tell you and recommend you see your vet — and we will not bath over something that needs treating first.
