Why we grind after we cut

Clipping a nail leaves a flat, hard edge. On a tile or marble floor that edge is what makes the clicking sound, and on furniture and skin it is what catches. Grinding takes that edge back to a smooth curve, which is the difference between a nail trim that lasts and one you notice three days later.

It also lets us take the nail shorter safely. Grinding removes material a fraction at a time, so we can work right up to the quick and watch it change colour as we approach — far more controlled than judging the same distance with clippers in one cut.

The dog who hates having their feet touched

This is the most common reason owners in Aventura give up on trimming at home, and it is almost always the result of one bad experience with a quicked nail. A dog remembers that, and after it they pull the paw away before the clippers are anywhere near.

Because we are cage-free and work by appointment, there is no queue behind your dog forcing the pace. We can take a foot at a time, stop, and come back to it. A dog that needs twenty minutes gets twenty minutes.

If the nails have gone long

When a nail grows long the quick inside grows with it, so it cannot all come off in one visit without hurting. The honest answer is a series of shorter trims two to three weeks apart, taking a little each time — the quick recedes as you go. We will tell you that up front rather than take too much and have your dog bleed in the lobby.
