Dental disease is one of the most common conditions in dogs, and it is largely preventable. Brushing at the salon every four to six weeks does not replace brushing at home — nothing does — but for the many owners who realistically will not brush daily, a regular professional brush is far better than nothing at all.

We use toothpaste made for dogs. Human toothpaste contains fluoride and often xylitol, and a dog swallows everything you put in their mouth, so it must never be used on them.

What brushing will not fix

Brushing removes soft plaque. Once plaque has hardened into tartar, brushing cannot shift it — that needs a scale and polish under anaesthetic at your vet. If we see heavy brown tartar, red gums or a bad smell, we will tell you honestly that your dog needs a vet, and we will not pretend a brush is a substitute.

Ear cleaning, and why floppy ears need it more

An ear that folds over traps heat and moisture underneath, and that is exactly the environment yeast likes. In a humid climate, with dogs that swim, that combination is why Cockers, Basset Hounds, Poodles and doodles come to us with ear problems far more often than upright-eared breeds.

Ear cleaning is included in every full groom. We clean what we can reach with a proper solution and cotton, and we never push anything down into the canal — the visible part is the part that should be cleaned.

The smell that means stop

A healthy ear is pale, dry and smells of nothing. If your dog’s ear is dark, waxy, smells sweet or yeasty, or the dog flinches when you touch the base of it, that is an infection and cleaning it here is not the answer. We will point it out and send you to your vet, because cleaning an infected ear hurts and pushes the problem further in.

Booking these on their own

Both are included in a full groom at no extra cost. Teeth brushing can be added to a bath, and either can be booked as a short standalone appointment if your dog is between grooms.
